Media

Media targets everyone especially women . The media has a thousand tricks to get you to buy their vision.

First the media targets men and women’s home lives and finally they target women’s bodies themselves

Media targets men with these ridiculous beer ads which say…

In our society today, it is almsot impossible to get away from the media and its constant barrage of images and ideas. Because of that, it is important that we, as consumers, are aware of possible negative consequences. That said, I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with a beautiful woman or a good looking man being used to sell stuff. I do think the context in which they are doing this is important. I am not for censorship. I am for an imformed public that can defend themselves. Your post focuses on the negative impact of the media on women. What about men? Are they negatively affected?

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with depictions/photographs of beautiful men and women.  The key word here is using; their images are used to sell stuff.  This is the first step in objectification: we begin to turn the images of people into objects.  Further the person is reduced to the same value of the object.  A person is worth more than a stick of deodorant, a bottle of beer or a pair of shoes.

Media influence on fashion seems to appear every and anywhere people go today. From the gym’s to the fast food drive thru’s media is a strong influence. Media seems to affect the way we feel about ourselves and our personality. You could almost lose confidants in one’s self by not upholding…

I like how you brought popular entertainment into this discussion of media’s influence. Commercials aren’t they only bits out there telling how we should dress, etc. Entertainment on tv, movies, and now the internet is driven by advertising. Without advertising there would a whole lot less of all three. The shows themselves are often advertisements themselves. Add to that the fact that most media outlets are owned by giant corporations, it gets harder and harder to sort out the difference between a commercial and a program. You brought up Twilight and I would just like to say that many of the messages to young girls in that series are potentially very damaging. I like your idea of broadening the type of people we see in the media. We are a country made of all types of people, so we should see more than just a couple.
